What is an
integrated Shield plan

If you are a Singaporean or a PR, you are automatically covered under our national medical insurance scheme: MediShield Life.

MediShield Life, however, was only designed as a basic cover to pay for hospital stays in Class B2/C wards. These are 6 to 9 beded wards. MediShield also does not cover pre and post hospitalisation claim.

To improve the basic MediShield Life cover, over 60% of Singaporeans have bought a private Integrated Shield Plan. These plans are offered by insurers like NTUC Income and Aviva. The policy cover can be improved even further by adding a rider that will cover most of the deductible and co-insurance amount under the Integrated Shield Plan.

Can MediSave be used to pay for this?

As an Integrated Shield Plan provides additional insurance coverage, there will be additional premium that has to be paid using your MediSave up to an a certain amount (Additional Withdrawal Limit). The excess amount will have to be topped up in cash. Having an additional Integrated Shield Plan will provide you the option to choose the type of wards, doctors and hospitals in public and private hospitals.

You can also use your MediSave to pay for your children's Integrated Shield premiums.

How much
coverage should you buy?

This really depends on the type of hospital you would like to stay in:

If you wish to limit your exposure to really large hospital bills, buying a rider to cover some of the co-payment would be ideal.

Here are some common questions
about Integrated Shield Plans

1. Are the premium rates guaranteed from year to year?

No, the premium rates may change from time to time and are not guaranteed. The product is guaranteed renewable, however, which means that the insurer has to offer you the product the following year if you are already a policyholder.

2. How much of my MediSave can I use for Integrated Shield Plans?

These are the MediSave withdrawal limits for Integrated Shield plans:

$300 if you are 40 years old or younger on your next birthday
$600 if you are 41 to 70 years old on your next birthday
$900 if you are 71 years or older on your next birthday

3. Can foreigners apply for an Integrated Shield Plan?

Yes, as long as you are resident in Singapore.

4. I don't know if I have an existing Shield plan or not.

If you are not sure of what Shield plan you have, please leave your contact details and we will email you the instructions on how to check.
